New Micro-credential approval: Apply clinical coding principles and processes in a health and wellbeing setting (Micro-credential) (Level 5, 30 credits) [Ref: 5380]

Toitū te Waiora is pleased to announce NZQA approval of the Apply clinical coding principles and processes in a health and wellbeing setting (Micro-credential). It can be assessed by the following approved skill standard:

Why was this micro-credential developed?

This micro-credential was designed following a request from the Planning Funding and Outcomes directorate at Health New Zealand to list a clinical coding qualification on the NZQCF.

The approved micro-credential fills a significant gap, as there are currently no clinical coding-related unit or skill standards listed on the Directory of Assessment and Skill Standards (DASS) or qualifications / micro-credentials listed on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF).

Learners/ākonga will be skilled in:

  • Identifying the principal diagnosis for admission.
  • Identifying the principal procedure/intervention.
  • Applying ACS0002 additional diagnosis standard.
  • Turbo coder electronic indexes, tabular and ACS.

There is an intention in the future to develop two further clinical coding micro-credentials to be listed on the NZQCF at Level 6 (intermediate) and Level 7 (advanced).

Next steps for providers

Providers will need to apply to NZQA for accreditation to award this micro-credential using this form: Micro-credential accreditation-only form

Prior to making an application to NZQA, providers will need to request support from either Toitū te Waiora Workforce Development Council (through to 31 December 2025) or the replacement Health and Community Industry Skills Board (ISB) from 1 January 2026.
