New Ophthalmic Technician Skill Standards and Micro-credential December 11th, 2025 We are pleased to announce that NZQA has approved three new skill standards and a micro-credential to meet the needs of the Ophthalmic Technician workforce. Identify the anatomy and physiology of the eye, common conditions, and ophthalmic terminology (Level 4) (5 credits) [Ref: 41048] Perform ophthalmic technician procedures (Level 4) (15 credits) [Ref:41049] Administer ophthalmic medications (Level 4) (5 credits) Ophthalmic Technician Practice (Micro-credential) (Level 4) (25 credits) [Ref:129568-1] Why were these skill standards developed? Toitū te Waiora in collaboration with Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora identified the need for new skill standards to enable the ophthalmic technician workforce to gain a NZQCF recognised qualification. How were these skill standards developed? These standards were developed in collaboration with industry, Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora and went out for national consultation during September 2025.
