Beauty Services qualification reviews update

Toitū te Waiora has now completed its review of six Beauty Services qualifications.

The Beauty Services qualifications being reviewed are:

3443 – New Zealand Certificate in Nail Technology (level 4)

3444 – New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy (level 4)

3445 – New Zealand Diploma in Beauty Therapy (level 5)

3458 – New Zealand Certificate in Specialised Epilation Therapy (level 6)

We extend our thanks to everyone involved in the consultation round and those who provided feedback about the qualification drafts we published for comment on 5 August 2022.

Given the nature of responses to the qualification drafts, Toitū te Waiora feels unable at present to make any significant changes to qualifications 3443, 3444, and 3445. Qualification 3458 has not been used in the sector since it was published by NZQA in November 2016. We are therefore recommending that this qualification is set to expire on 31 December 2023.

Toitū te Waiora is in the process of setting up a Beauty Services Sector Advisory Group which will support future qualification reviews and the development of new qualification products.  The aim is to bring the sector together and map out a cohesive direction that best serves what the industry requires. At this stage, we are planning to conduct new reviews for qualifications 3443, 3444 and 3445 during 2024 in conjunction with the Beauty Services Sector Advisory Group.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are suggesting that reviews of the following two qualifications are deferred until 2024:

  • 3457 – New Zealand Certificate in Spa Therapies (level 5)
  • 3459 – New Zealand Certificate in Specialised Skincare Therapy (level 6)
