We are pleased to announce that NZQA has approved nine new skill standards to align with the New Zealand Certificates in Prisoner Management (Level 3) [Ref: 2658 v3], (Level 4) [Ref: 2659 v3), and (Level 5) [3877 v2]. 

Why were these skill standards developed? 

Toitū te Waiora WDC identified the need for new skill standards to align with the New Zealand Certificates in Prisoner Management following a qualification review in 2023.  

How were these skill standards developed? 

Review of the existing unit standards and development of skill standards took place between October 2024 and March 2025 in consultation with Department of Corrections, Serco, Te Pūkenga, Public Service Association, and the Corrections Association of NZ.

These skill standards will shortly be listed on the DASS and available for providers to offer. Please visit our website for programme endorsement requirements. 

What is next? 

These nine skill standards will join the level 3 skill standards that were approved earlier this year. All new skill standards will be replacing the current unit standards, which are set to expire on 31st December 2026.
