Proposed new qualification: New Zealand Diploma in Education Support (Primary) Level 5 

Toitū te Waiora is seeking feedback on a proposed new qualification – the New Zealand Diploma in Education Support (Primary) Level 5. This qualification aims to meet the growing need to provide pre-degree pathways beyond Level 4 for learners currently working, or considering working in a support role within the primary education sector, or as a stepping-stone for those considering a career in teaching.  

The Diploma covers key areas such as teaching pedagogy, cultural responsiveness, and the application of the New Zealand Curriculum, alongside the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Graduates of this qualification will gain the skills and knowledge to work in primary education roles such as: 

  • Education Support Workers 
  • Teacher Aides 
  • Library Assistants 
  • Community Support Workers 
  • Out of school care worker in school holiday programmes and after school care. 

This qualification has been developed in collaboration with Bethlehem Tertiary Institute, with support from stakeholders from across the Education sector.
