Proposed review changes to the New Zealand Diploma in Embalming and Funeral Directing (Level 5) [Ref: 1942 and 1943 v3]

Toitu te Waiora has completed the initial sector consultation for the review of: 

New Zealand Diploma in Funeral Directing (Level 5) [Ref:1942 V2] and New Zealand Diploma in Embalming (Level 5) [Ref:1943 V2] 

Overall, both qualifications have been found fit for purpose. The review has highlighted some minor amendments. 

Refer to the below table and Qualification Overview documents highlighting the minor changes that are being proposed to version 2.  

Consistent, positive feedback was received, indicating that:

  • The qualifications remain relevant, current, and comprehensive
  • The graduate profiles remain well-suited to industry needs
  • Graduates transition smoothly back into the workplace

New Zealand Diploma in Funeral Directing (Level 5) [Ref:1942]

This qualification will be awarded by any organisation with an approved programme  This qualification may be awarded by any tertiary education organisation with an approved programme or accreditation to deliver an approved programme leading to this qualification 
Evidence requirements for assuring consistency/ Ngā taunaki hei whakaū i te tauritenga 
Evidence may include: 

Internal and external moderation processes and results relating to the assessment of graduate outcomes (this may include both theory and practical observations). 

Post graduate survey of graduates including feedback on course delivery, qualification achievement and suggestions for improvement of the qualification. 

Feedback from employers on the perception of the value of the training and qualification, and suggestions for improvement. 

Any other evidence. 

Evidence may include: 

Analysis of feedback from employers and graduates which demonstrate how well graduates are meeting the graduate outcomes in the workplace. 

Evidence of effective internal quality assurance systems to assure that graduates meet the graduate outcomes of the qualification 

Any other evidence. 

General conditions for programme/ Ngā tikanga whānui o te hōtaka 
None.  Programmes must:  

Honour Te Tiriti O Waitangi in the application of funeral services in Aotearoa New Zealand.  

Embed cultural responsiveness and safety in the funeral services sector. 

Reflect knowledge of multicultural practice.  

Enabling Good Lives (EGL) principles include a core set of values that support disabled people now and into the future. Programmes must reflect the Enabling Good Lives (EGL) principles

The following embalming outcomes will be assessed using a final national practical examination: 

Prepare a dead human body by embalming or other care procedures for viewing applying legal and ethical responsibilities 

Embalm a dead human body, applying legal and ethical responsibilities. 

The national practical examination will be conducted by national examiners nominated by the New Zealand Embalmers Association and approved by the Funeral Services Training Trust of New Zealand (FSTT).   

Accredited organisations will contract the examiners to carry out the practical examination. After the completion of all practical examinations, the FSTT moderator will provide a moderation report on the outcomes of the examination. The report may recommend changes that the organisation may need to make to the examination process. 

Programmes must:

Monitoring and moderation of practical examinations will be conducted by representatives of the Funeral Advisory Committee for Education (‘FACE’). Contact details for FACE can be provided by Toitū te Waiora Workforce Development Council if necessary.
